Dolby Atmos enabled height effects speakerswith 0.75-inch aluminum dome tweeter and 5.25” polypropylene cone bass/midrange driver with stamped steel basket, all incorporated into a beautiful High Gloss Black cabinet that is voice-matched with MartinLogan Motion speakers.
What makes the Motion Series sound so amazing? MartinLogan's dedicated in-house engineering team started by utilizing and refining the most advanced, compact technologies and combining them with innovative engineering. The result is an emotionally engaging sound that rivals (and most times trounces) traditional loudspeakers of similar size and price.
Dolby Atmos® Enabled Speakers
MartinLogan Motion AFX Dolby Atmos enabled speakers are designed to create a height layer of sound above the listener that better connects viewers with the richness, detail and clarity of the on screen experience.
The Motion AFX is designed to sit on top of floorstanding and bookshelf speakers in MartinLogan’s Motion series. These models include the Motion 15, 20, 35XT, 40 and 60XT. Designed to reflect sound off of the ceiling in a Dolby Atmos entertainment system, The AFX will also work with other brands of speakers with a flat top. For systems where a speaker-top mounting is not possible, other installation options are available.
Folded Motion® Tweeters
The signature Folded Motion tweeters utilize extremely low mass diaphragms that "squeeze" air, and require significantly less excursion than the typical 1-inch dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.
Immersive Dolby Atmos Experience
Dolby Atmos delivers captivating sound that places and moves audio anywhere in the room, including overhead, to bring entertainment alive all around the audience. Whether you are listening to music, movies, television shows, or playing your favorite video games, Dolby Atmos delivers the full impact of the entertainment experience.
Each Motion AFX speaker features a 0.75-inch aluminum dome tweeter and 5.25” polypropylene cone bass/midrange driver with stamped steel basket, all incorporated into a beautiful High Gloss Black cabinet. The shape of the Motion AFX cabinet is specifically designed to angle the drivers towards the ceiling in order to accurately deliver a Dolby Atmos sound experience above the listeners.
MartinLogan Motion AFX review: Remarkable add-on speakers for object-oriented movie soundtracks
"Major audio advancements don’t come often, but when they do, the effects can be astounding. Going from mono to stereo, stereo to multi-channel, and now multi-channel to object-oriented audio represents a sizable leap in performance, realism, and engagement. If you’ve wanted to embrace Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, but weren’t sold on Atmos-enabled speakers, then doubt no more. MartinLogan’s Motion AFX speakers can transform any setup and speaker system."
The MartinLogan Motion AFX Dolby Atmos Enabled Speakers Reviewed
"If you desire to add Dolby Atmos immersive surround sound to your home theater setup, and don't like the idea mounting speakers in your ceiling, the MartinLogan Motion AFX is definitely a speaker add-on to consider."
These are very good speakers to complete the desired Atmos effect! There are a few things that I had questions on prior to purchasing that may be helpful to buyers:
1) The degree of which the driver fires is 25 degrees. This angle changes pending on which tower you set them on. On Motion 60XT they fire at 20 degrees.
2) My speakers are located at a height of 4.5 feet with an 8ft ceiling. It is recommended not to go above 50%. The speakers sound great IF the angle is correct. See next...
3) The angle of the speakers will likely need to be adjusted as 25 degrees is not enough if you don’t have 10+ ft ceilings and sit 8 feet from the speakers. There are adjustable stands online that sit on the towers and the angles can be adjusted. This will be needed in most cases if you want the best immersion. I purchased mine on amazon for $80 and they are phenomenal.
In closing, these speakers really can produce effects very close to in ceiling speakers WITH THE CORRECT SETUP! Highly recommended.
DTS:X here I come!!! Having been a fan of DTS for many years, when I learned of DTS:X a height channel to rival Dolby Atmos, I got on board by purchasing an AVR receiver that supported this format. (When working for Paramount Pictures as a Sound and Projection engineer, 30+ years ago, I had the honor of working with the person who started the DTS company.)
The next purchase was the Martin Logan Motion AFX pair of "Height Channel" speakers.
I have guests ducking when playing a DTS:X movie on my system.
The Motion AFX speakers do the job perfectly!
